Founded in 2008, Jazcom is one of Australasia’s premier spelling facility. Owned and operated by Colin and Meagan Branthwaite, the facility is known for its Horse Spelling and Rehabilitation services. However, the Branthwaites are also passionate Pin Hookers and enjoy the challenge of discovering ‘discovering diamonds in the rough’ and polishing them to shine.
Jazcom purchased 29 horses at the Australian Weanling Sale, Australian Easter Yearling Sale Round 2, and Scone Yearling Sale for A$711,000. Colin Branthwaite speaks to The Impact about their purchases and their plans and much more
Q: What are your plans for your recent weanling purchases?
A: We purchased 29 weanlings on Inglis Digital Online, Inglis Australian Weanling Sale, and the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale. All these are pin-hooks and will be entered into sales to be sold at next year’s yearling sales. We do racehorses and some may be retained to race if they are to be sold way below they're reserve, if we like them and if we think they will run.
Q: What was your experience like with digital sales programs this year?
A: Although it is not the same as seeing the horses in the flesh if the vendors do a video of the horse from all angles and a walk to and from the camera we get a good look at the confirmation. But we would not purchase anything worth good money unless we inspected the horse personally.
Q: What has been the most successful horse you've purchased at these sales earlier? Please tell us more?
A: The most successful Pinhook we have had is a Brazen Beau filly that we sold at MM 2019; we paid 40K for her as a weanling and sold her for A$230K.
Q: What do you look for when you buy horses? Typically how many horses do you buy in a year? Do you have a price range you don't exceed - come what may? What sales are a 'must-attend' for you every year?
A: Meagan and myself inspect the horses together and we do our notes, we then always sit through the sale from start to finish and bid when we think a horse is a value or more important we think we can make money on any horse. We usually don't spend over A$40K give or take. We usually purchase around 20 horses or so.
Q: What is on your bucket list for Jazcom Thoroughbreds over the next couple of years?
A: We will continue to run Jazcom as a high-quality spelling farm and continue to do our Pinhook investments. We would be happy to prepare other clients' horses for the sales also, so they can join our drafts.
Q: And finally, who do you most admire as a trainer and why? And which is your favorite horse of all time?
A: Growing up I was just in awe of Jack Denham. To me, he is my favorite trainer. I did work for him and some things he could do with horses was absolutely mind-blowing and he never talked, the horses did the talking. He also never rigged his horses.
