Top conditioner John O’Shea purchased two colts at the recently concluded Easter Yearling Sale. The Newhaven Park bred-Not A Single Doubt bay colt was knocked down to him for A$250,000 while he paid A$130,000 for the son of Medaglia d'Oro.
O’Shea started his career in racing by mucking out boxes for the local trainers worked with legendary trainers such as Tommy Smith. Bart Cummings, Gai Waterhouse and Garry Moore and was head trainer for the global operation, Godolphin for three years.
Although the Medaglia d'Oro was purchased for a client, the Not A Single Doubt colt is owned by him.
And his plans for both horses involve, “winning as many races as possible.”
Like his peers, the strict lockdown restrictions in Australia meant that he was not able to get out of the New South Wales area to inspect the horses.
Talking of impacts of the pandemic he says, “The pandemic may ultimately affect prizemoney long term but it will have no effect on two-year-old racing.”
And lastly, when it comes to maintaining lockdown restrictions at his own facilities, he says, “My family and staff have done a great job to keep isolated. We take the temps of every staff member before they enter the yard and try to maintain good social distancing while at work. Cross fingers it seems to be working.”
O’Shea is also the principal for his Champion Thoroughbreds syndicate, that proposes to select the very best credentialed horses within an affordable cost frame, for people who would like to experience ownership of a racehorse, can do so, with only a minority shareholding.
