Dual Group One & multi Stakes’ winning trainer, Jason Coyle was one of the top buyers at the recent sales in Australia. Having worked alongside some of the best Australasian trainers including Gai Waterhouse, David Payne, John Size and John O'Shea, Coyle first opened up his stables in Newcastle before taking the reigns as head trainer for Patinack farm in 2008 at Warwick Farm where he controlled the large operation. In 2009 Coyle left Patinack Farm to pursue his career as a public trainer at Randwick. In 2013 Jason returned to the semi-rural surrounds of Warwick Farm and has been thriving ever since.
Jason Coyle spoke to The Impact about his purchases and much more in an exclusive interview:
Q: Jason Coyle Racing was one of the top 10 individual buyers at the Easter Yearling Sale (R2). Could you please tell us about your plans for those horses?
A: They will be syndicated and race in NSW.
Q: What has been the most successful horse you've purchased at this sale? Please tell us more?
A: I think my favourite was a filly that now races as Kawaikini she was a A$6k buy and now has prize money over $300k
Q: What was your experience like with digital sales programs this year? How many other sales have you bought this year?
A: I was at the sale – but have purchased from the Magic Millions recent sale without any hiccups on the digital platform
Q: What do you look for when you buy horses? How do you shortlist the horses you are looking at buying? Typically how many horses do you buy in a year? Do you have a price range you don't exceed - come what may? What sales are a 'must-attend' for you every year?
A: I look for an athlete; something that I feel will improve from the sale grounds and develop into a horse that can race on past its 3yo season. I do my own work; I like to see as many horses as I can – not necessarily a parade, but nice horses should generally catch your eye. The number of horses purchased will often vary, but generally six-ten purchases per year. Very rarely do I purchase above A$100k – must attend Inglis Classic/Scone.
Q: What is on your bucket list for Jason Coyle Racing over the next decade?
A: Continue to have solid seasons and produce horses that earn solid prize money for their owners – Stakes horses would be fantastic and everyone wants to win at the highest level possible, but if we can keep horses performing well, hopefully, the rest will fall into place.
Q: How did you get involved in racing?
A: I was interested in the form to start – my dad liked to have a bet and it interested me as to how you could look at a race result – watching races to see how good/poor a run was regardless of finishing position.
Q: Please tell us about your most favourite horse and why?
A: Octagonal, Saintly and Juggler – stars of their era – and was lucky enough to work with Juggler at Tulloch Lodge.
