The Concorde Stakes is a Gr.3 sprint held at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney. Raced over a short distance of 1000 metres, the Concorde Stakes is an exciting sprint that really tests the abilities of some of the more talented horses on the Sydney circuit.
Open to horses of both sexes aged three years and older, the Concorde Stakes is run under set weights with penalties. The Concorde Stakes is held on Chelmsford Stakes Day and shares the race card with three other Group races: the Chelmsford Stakes (1600m), Furious Stakes (1200m) and the Tramway Stakes (1400m).
Those horses who perform particularly well in the Concorde Stakes might go on to target the Gr.2 The Shorts (1100m) back at the track a fortnight later.
The Concorde Stakes is now also a gun lead-up to the world’s richest turf race the $15 million The Everest (1200m) held back at the track in October. Redzel won back-to-back editions of the Concorde Stakes in 2017 and 2018 ahead of his two historical wins in The Everest.
Gordon Richards’ Gr.1 winner Gytrash ($5) was ultra-impressive first-up winning the Concorde Stakes 2020 in near track-record time with a 1.5 length success over the odds-on favourite Nature Strip ($1.45) ahead of a rematch in The Everest 2020.
