Those three words can be used to describe the foundation of the summer equine celebration that is The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Carnival.
Queensland’s Gold Coast with its breathtaking coastline is the home of the annual January Magic Millions event that has become one of the most exciting sales and racing carnivals conducted anywhere in the world.
A catalog of more than 1,000 Australian and New Zealand bred yearlings which embody equine excellence is the feature celebration of the thoroughbred over the ten day Carnival.
The Gold Coast Yearling Sale is the largest sale of its type conducted in the Southern Hemisphere. From its very first edition in 1986 which produced Snippets, a triple Group One-winning sprinter, breed-shaping stallion, and broodmare sire, the Gold Coast Yearling Sale is the auction source of some of the most precocious and prodigious racetrack champions.
From Golden Slipper winners (eleven of them), Classic winners to global sprint stars, and Melbourne Cup winners, each edition of the Gold Coast Yearling Sale produces a life-changing result.
The winners of the first three editions of The Everest, Redzel and Yes Yes Yes, were sold at this very sale to their owners - as well as every Group One-winning two-year-old colt from last season including the first six horses across the line in this year’s Golden Slipper, the world’s richest race for two-year-olds.
Most famously, the flagship Gold Coast Yearling Sale is the sales source of Winx - the world’s highest ever prizemoney earner ($26.45m) and winner of a record 25 Group One races. The daughter of Street Cry was purchased from the Gold Coast sales ring in 2013 for $230,000.
Many of today’s commercial stallions were purchased as yearlings from the Gold Coast Yearling Sale. This honor roll includes Snitzel, Written Tycoon, Zoustar, Sebring, Savabeel, Pierro, Capitalist, Vancouver, Pierata, Dissident, Not a Single Doubt, Rubick, Shooting To Win, Star Witness, Star Turn, Sizzling, Stratum Star and Super One.
It’s not just in the sale ring that Magic Millions creates life-changing opportunities that bring us together to celebrate and be in awe of the thoroughbred.
Magic Millions continues to innovate with its world-first race series and development of women in the thoroughbred industry via the pioneering Racing Women initiative. Each January Carnival culminates with the running of the $10.25m The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Raceday.
With seven of nine races worth $1m or more in prizemoney highlighted by the $2m The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic and the $2m Gold Coast Magic Millions 3YO Guineas plus $750,000 in Racing Women’s Bonuses, getting involved is a dream that an investor at any level can legitimately have.
In 2020, the feature $2m 2YO Classic was won by the stellar filly Away Game. Trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Away Game’s ecstatic eight female owners collected $1.49m for winning the race and first place in the $500,000 2YO Racing Women’s Bonus.
The 2021 edition of the Gold Coast Yearling Sale will run from 13-17 January, with the $10.25m The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Raceday on Saturday 16 January. The catalogue for the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest and best yearling sale will be available in late November.
