Steel Prince is likely to have won his way into this year's Gr.1 Melbourne Cup after producing a tough performance to win the Gr.3 Geelong Cup on Wednesday.
The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained import is currently 35th in the order of entry for this year's Cup, but Wednesday's win is likely to attract a weight penalty.
The Freedman's trained the quinella in the race, with recent acquisition Le Don De Vie finishing a head away in second.
It's also Sam Freedman's first Group winner after going into partnership with his father at the start of the season.
Steel Prince contested last year's Melbourne Cup after gaining entry via a win in the Andrew Ramsden. He finished ninth after turning up for the Melbourne Cup by finishing seventh behind Prince Of Arran in last year's Geelong Cup.
