A million times, we must have heard, that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. With a keen interest in the different aspects of selecting a horse, Bevan has been a regular at various sales since where he followed his father around. An eternal student of the business, Bevan constantly pursues perfection with all his ventures. After being a known name and working with various businesses across the chain. Bevan Smith founded Bevan Bloodstocks and is already in the books as one of the biggest buyers.
This year Bevan Bloodstock made quite a few purchases at the Inglis Ready to Race sale that caught our eye. We sat down with him to discuss this year's sale to hear from the man himself. Here are the excerpts.
Q: You bought some amazing horses at the Inglis Ready2Race Sale a few weeks ago. Could you tell us more about these purchases such as who were they bought for, where are they headed and what races will they be targeted at? What made these horses special - pedigree nicks, confirmation, or something else?
A: I bought three horses for Oculus Racing who is headed by trainer Joe Waldron.
The Written Tycoon X Play For Time colt was the standout of the sale for us as he has a great pedigree, he is by the hottest sire in Australia, he is a lovely type with a great temperament and his stride data was exceptional. He is a very exciting horse, we have him in work already and he gives a great feel. He is a horse that we will try to target the Inglis Millennium with straight away.
The Mikki Isle X Wanaka Dream colt is a very forward colt as well. We will get him up and going and see how far he gets in his first preparation, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him at the races early in the new year.
And Vancouver X Inchita is a really nice colt as well and he will follow a similar path to the Mikki Isle.
For the first time, I assisted Michael Costa to buy really nice Pins colt out of Acquisto. He is a nice style of horse and his breezed really impressed me. I think he is a horse that will do well in Queensland.
The other two horses were purchased for a Singapore client that races horses in NZ.
The Tivaci X Adriatico breezed very impressively and come with a good recommendation from the preparer. He is a classic looking horse and I think we could see him in the Guineas races next spring, possibly turn into a Derby horse.
Q: What has your past experience been with this sale? What did you think of the catalog quality this year?
A: This is the second year that I have purchased at the sale. We have a couple of last year’s purchases about to step out that are showing good ability in their training, so I am excited to see how they perform race day. The sale this year had plenty of depth to and I expect to see some nice horses come out of the sale, hopefully, the ones I purchased.
Q: Although it's early days, is there a graduate that you hope to see soaring the heights?
A: I expect a horse called Starlight in Singapore to be a flag bearer in the coming months, he is a horse that is about to have his first start and shows above-average ability.
Q: Will you be attending any other sales in 2020? If yes, which ones?
A: 2020 is a unique year with travel restrictions. I am currently in quarantine in NZ so I can attend the NZB Ready to Run Sale. This means forgoing attending the Magic Millions 2yo Sale, but I will try to be active there from afar.
Q: And finally, where do you see innovation and growth within the Thoroughbred industry?
A: With current times and the limited travel we are allowed to do we need to look at technology to help us make informed decisions buying horses. I already use such things as stride analysis, heart scans and biomechanical measuring to assist with buying. The more boxes we can tick off the greater our chances are of buying a good horse.
