Wamuran-based Brian Smith at Waylon J Stud and owner of the recently crowned 2020 Champion Broodmare - Rezonet (dam of Tyzone) speaks to The Impact about their Magic Millions 2YO’s in Training Sale draft, the impact from COVID19, and much more:
Q: Your draft consists of some amazing horses. Could you tell us more about these horses, especially the highlights and what makes these horses special - pedigree nicks, confirmation, or something else?
A: We only had a relatively small draft this year, consisting of only 3 horses. However, they were three horses I was very happy with.
Q: What has your past experience been with this sale? Please tell us about your past successes.
A: We have been preparing horses for the Magic Millions Breeze Up sale since it’s inception and have been selling under our own banner since 2002.
Over the years we have sold many winners through the 2YO's In Training Sales Probably the best performers to come to mind are The Sixties and Soldi Domani, both of which were stakes performers. Another good horse that we sold through the sale was CheonjiBulpae who was sold to Korea and won the equivalent of A$1 million.
Q: Will you be attending any other sales in 2020? If yes, which ones? Please tell us more.
A: We won’t be attending any more sales this year as this is the last sale for the year. We now work towards our 2021 Yearling draft.
Q: And finally, where do you see innovation and growth within the Thoroughbred industry?
A: I think as far as the sales sector is concerned I can see innovation and growth in the online promotion and presale marketing of the horses. The worldwide Covid pandemic has forced a change in how we had to sell horses when the live sales were not possible. Much of the marketing and presentation were forced to be via the internet. Photos, high-quality detailed videos, video endoscopes, x-rays, height, and weight measurements all being transparently provided online. I think this trend of giving buyers as much information as possible presale will continue. Not only does it give buyers more confidence it also broadens the buying bench for interested buyers that can't attend a live sale.
