Tapizar, a 12YO son of Tapit who was set to be shipped to Japan to stand stud at Yushun Stallion Station for the 2021 season, was euthanized after an accident in his stall at the Gainesway quarantine barn earlier this month. The Group One winner was scheduled to travel in mid-January.
Tapizar is the sire of Monomoy Girl, a seven-time Group One winner and 2018 champion 3YO filly whom Spendthrift Farm bought for US$9.5 million at Fasig Tipton's November Sale. Monomoy Girl will continue racing in 2021.
The third-leading sire by cumulative earnings from his sire class, Tapizar is also third on this year's fifth-crop sires list. He is also the sire of Delaware Oaks.
Tapizar won the Gr.1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile and San Fernando Stakes on his way to earning US$972,632. He stood his entire stud career at Gainesway since he was retired from racing in 2013.
