Co-owner and stud manager Mick Malone has always strategised the best way forward to maximise sales. A recent development, from a point of strategy has been Kitchwin participating in the Adelaide Sales since 2018, which has broadened the quality at the sale and increased options for buyers and given Kitchwin a new audience.
Here Malone sheds light on their top lots, their 2021 success and their plans for the rest of the yearling sales season.
Q: Since you are one of the vendors with the biggest drafts at this sale and you have a number of very high-quality horses in your draft, would you be able to suggest the five horses that you would like to spotlight and tell us more about their breeding?
A: We have a really nice Sooboog colt from Ginali, he has good substance, bone and a great work-man like attitude like his father, we think he will be well received like the other Sooboog’s have been this year. There’s a Smart Missile filly we are consigning for Twin Hills Stud, who is a half sister to the Black Pearl Stakes winner in Wild Vixen, she is a great physical and has the right pedigree to back her up. There’s a nice filly by Russian Revolution from the tough race mare Zasorcaress, she has really relished in the prep, she has one of the best attitudes in the barn, and good substance and bone and walks with purpose, and a good pedigree to back her up residually. The Zacinto colt is the one of his kind at the sale, he is making the trip over from New Zealand and is closely related to one of Zacinto’s best performers in Vassilator. There’s a really stylish colt by Divine Prophet from Magic Raelene, he is a strong forward colt, he is great balance and is a real eye catcher.
Q: We are almost at the mid-way point of the yearling sales season. How has it been for you so far? What were your top sales thus far?
A: The yearling sales season so far for Kitchwin Hills has been great, we’ve had great results at both Magic Millions and Inglis Classic. We sold Sooboog’s stock at both sales for an average of 7 times service fee. We sold a daughter of Written Tycoon for A$350,000, a son ofI Am Invinciblefor A$420,000 at Magic Millions and a son of Maurice for A$330,000. At classic, we sold the sale topper for our good clients Richard and Kim for A$625,000 to George Moore Bloodstock/Team Moore Racing.
Q: What other sales do you plan to attend this year?
A: We have a lovely draft to present at Easter this year, it is a select draft of only 11 but from mainly proven sires such as Fastnet Rock, Snitzel, Not A Single Doubt, Exceed and Excel, So You Think, I Am Invincible, Redoute’s Choice etc. And showcasing a half brother to Dubious, a 3/4 brother to Snitzel (one of the last Redoute’s Choice colts) and a daughter of Group 1 winner Ana Royale, just to name a few. We are really looking forward to getting them down to Riverside in April. We will also attend the Magic Millions National in May/June.
Q: What's been the most difficult thing to do during the COVID 19/ what do you miss most from sales during the pre-cover (2019) era?
A: Our industry has been very fortunate, and barring Easter last year we have had a fairly uninterrupted business especially when you compare other industries. So, it would be very unfair to complain.
Q: For the current sale, have you had a lot of farm visits? Or do you expect your buyers to inspect the horses at the sale venue?
A: Typically, we tend to not get many farm visits for Adelaide sale, most will see us at the sale.
Q: How long have you been exhibiting at this sale and who would be your top graduates from this sale?
A: We have only been taking horses to the Adelaide sale since 2018, with only 3YO hitting the track now from our Adelaide drafts the success is just starting to come through, but we have managed to have sold 3 winners so far and 2 place getters, including a 2 year old Headwatercolt from Non Capishe who is showing nice ability, he ran third at Moonee Valley in January.
