Moonee Valley Racing Club has decided to wait until Racing Victoria's Melbourne Cup report and recommendations for international competitors is released to finalise its wishlist of Cox Plate international runners.
The findings and recommendations from the report, due today, could impact which horses are likely to fly to Australia for the Spring Carnival.
The report, which has been completed by RV and the Victoria Racing Club, is likely to recommend new requirements for horses before being allowed to compete Down Under in the spring. Industry consensus is that there will be more stringent checking of international horses before they start their journey to Australia.
MVRC CEO Michael Browell said the Melbourne Cup review's litmus test would be how it is received by international stables.
Since the great mare Winx won her last Cox Plate in 2018, the race dubbed “the best two minutes of sport in Australia” has been taken out by two elite international runners.
Japan’s Lys Gracieux was dynamic in 2019, and the Irish-bred Sir Dragonet saluted in 2020.
The release of the report and recommendations for international runners is being built up as one of the biggest moments in recent times in racing.
If whispers are anything to go by, then there will be quite a number of hoops to jump through in order for those runners to compete down under.
