In celebration of one of his strongest drafts for Inglis’ Ready To Race sale during Everest week, leading bloodstock agent Black Ryan chats with The Impact about his newest draft, the recent success of his graduates and industry favourites.
Q: You have an impressive draft of 18 outstanding horses going into the sale. Please tell us more about your top 5 horses in the draft and what makes these horses special?
A: Overall I am quite pleased with our draft this year, however Just picking a few to highlight, Let's start with:
Lot 88 - Deep Field x Streamline Pearl Colt: A Good sized, active colt with a terrific frame that is not heavy, this fellow is a real athlete. I'm sure he will be popular. By a stallion (Deep Field) who is on fire and doing exceptionally well both here and in Asia, The colt also has a deep and active pedigree on the dam's side (Streamline Pearl) with last season’s Group One-winning 2YO CAPTIVANT now in the family. He was purchased as a weanling by the client.
Lot 90 - Flying Artie x Stryking Debut Colt: A definite highlight of my draft, the Flying Artie colt has shown a great attitude and a willingness to please from day 1. A colt with a lovely way about him and a motor to match, he is going to develop into a lovely 3YO. Sire doing great things with Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Artorius in his first crop among other high class performing 2YO. Purchased by clients at the Inglis HTBA May Sale from the Edinglassie Draft.
Pedigree: Stryking Debut
Lot 40 - Capitalist x Orchestrator Gelding: A 2021 Inglis EASTER Sale Graduate, By a young stallion who could well be the next big thing in CAPITALIST, out of a Stakes winning American mare who is 100% winners to runners, there's a fair bit to like about this horse. Capitalist’s first 2YO crop produced 22 individual winners and 11 individual black-type horses and this fellow fits the mould.
A horse with a good constitution and a good attitude that moves well and has the right credentials to make it as a racehorse.
Pedigree: Capitalist x Orchestrator
Lot 44 - Thronum x Probationary Colt: An Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale purchase, this colt is by freshman sire son of the all-conquering SNITZEL in THRONUM. His 3YO half-brother TAUNTING (Brazen Beau) has had 4 starts for 2 wins including a recent unlucky run at Stakes level at Moonee Valley. This colt is a sharp colt with a great attitude and is very much in the mould of some of the better Snitzel horses' I have been fortunate to work with.
A really good advertisement for his first season Sire, I cannot see why he won't prove popular when buyers come to view him.
Pedigree: Probationary
Q: Please tell us about some of your biggest sales successes from this event in the past and the recent racetrack successes of your top graduates.
A: We have been very fortunate to be able to sell some quality stock over the last 4 years, whom I believe we have done the right thing in their education process, allowing them to head to their new trainers and perform at their best. We’ve had 4 winners in a week from previous drafts just in this last week, those in 3 different Australian jurisdictions.
We have had winners in Hong Kong, Singapore, China & across the Eastern Seaboard of Australia, I'd like to think we do our best when we source our yearlings to present a type of horse for everyone's different preferences.
Q: As the sale is being held during Everest week, what does it mean to put your draft on the biggest stage in Australia?
A: I love The Everest, in such a short time it has reinvigorated the Sydney Spring Carnival and brought a new audience to Racing in New South Wales. The sale is held around the Everest Carnival just adds that little bit extra to the buzz of the week for me.
Q: Being born into this industry, what is your earliest racing memory? Also, please tell us about your favorite racehorse, racetrack, and stallion and why?
A: My earliest racing memories are simply getting around the stables with my father at Epsom when he was a foreman for John Hawkes in the late '80s. He had some good horses like Cameronic who won a Goodwood at the time. My first genuine big race memory however was being at the 1991 Melbourne Cup won by Let's Elope when I was 5.
Favourite Track - Triple Dead Heat between Sha Tin, Caulfield, and Rosehill.
Favourite Stallion - Has to be Snitzel. Having been trained by my father and then dealt with so many of his stock and watched him go from A$33k service down to A$17k to now top of the chart's 4 times has simply been extraordinary to witness.
Q: Is there a stallion that you consider to be under the radar and why?
A: He might not be under the radar anymore after what his first crop has produced, but I'd have to say Flying Artie who stands at Newgate Farm. The first season at the sales they were not the flavour of the month you could say but they came out at the races and have just kept on winning. I haven't had my hands on many but the few I have I like. The colt in this years' draft is a perfect example.
Q: If you were one of the Everest slot holders, which horse would you pick?
A: Nature Strip or Masked Crusader
