Cheltenham Stable’ owner Malcolm has put together the ultimate draft drawing from their roots in pre-training and breaking-in. Here, he chats with The Impact about his pre-sale education process and the special qualities of each horse in his draft
Q: You have an impressive boutique draft for this year’s sales. Please tell us more about what makes them special.
A: We've got an impressive small draft of quality horses heading to Inglis this year. Most of them are by very good proven sires as well as one by Vadamos who has some nice first crop horses now 3-year-olds who are performing very well.
Lot 115 - Pierro X Ajeeta colt: He's been a really nice horse to work with. There has been a bit of a pedigree update with the half-brother to the dam going on to win a few more races as well as being stakes placed. He's been a beautiful horse to work with. He loves his job, has got a great attitude, is extremely professional and moves very well. We can’t wait to see what he's going to develop into.
He's probably a horse that I think that will make a really nice autumn 2YO colt. He gives a nice feel and I think he's going to have a fair bit of early speed to him.
Lot 34 - Tavistock (NZ) X Ms Seneca Rock (USA) colt: His Dam is a Stakes winner and has produced a Stakes winner and a Stakes placegetter. He's a really nice horse, very athletic and has a huge amount of natural ability. He is likely to be a 3YO type of horse and to be competitive from 1400m out to the Derby distances, we believe he has a huge amount of talent. He is a beautiful horse with an explosive turn of foot.
Lot 162 - Vadamos (FR) X Equivalence filly: She should be a great 3YO. She's naturally athletic has a good action, and a very good brain as well. She's been a really nice filly to work with. And she's just been an improver the whole way through the prep.
Lot 141 - Tavistock (NZ) X Charlotte Russe (NZ) filly: She has been lovely horse to work with. We broke her in early on and she caught my eye at the time. I had a bit of a chat with the owners about taking her through to the Sydney Ready2Race sale. She's going to be a filly that can run shorter trips as well as a possible Oak’s filly. She's got a good action and gives a great feel.
Lot 76 - Iffraaj (GB) X Snippins (NZ) colt: He's been a big improver all the way through. He has got a great action on him. He feels like he’s going to be a middle distance/staying horse. He is one of the nicest horses to work with and has definitely been a stable favorite.
Q: Where did you buy these horses?
A: The Pierro colt was purchased from the Inglis Classic sale, the Tavistock colt purchased from the NZB Book 1 sale and the Iffraaj colt is owned by his breeder. The Tavistock filly and Vadamos filly both went through the NZB Book 1 sale as well.
Q: And how are they being shipped to Australia? And will you be participating in any other sales this year?
A: They will fly to Australia on the 21st of October. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to go with them. We were really looking forward to going, especially, as we have such a nice draft this year.
We also have a small and select draft for the NZB Ready To Run sale.
Q: Could you tell us more about your business?
A: We are based in Cambridge, New Zealand. We are mainly breakers and pre-trainers. We have broken in 18 individual Group 1 winners, 6 of those are derby winners. We have a couple of broodmares which we keep at Wentwood Grange. My wife is a show jumper who is actually the current Lady Rider of the Year and so we have a few showjumping horses as well.
