As a leading Australasian businessman and a former New Zealand Rugby and All Black Board Member for 6 years, Peter Kean is no stranger to sports or success. But he is acutely aware of the fact that he is in lockdown and couldn’t travel to watch his horse win the richest race on turf.
“We were in Lockdown in Auckland so we watched the race as a Family,” said Kean.
“My wife Judith, our son Patrick & his partner Victoria & our daughter Anna & her fiancée Sam”.
“Relieved was probably my initial reaction, but of course over the moon & excitement soon followed once the ‘WIN’ had finally sunk in!” he said recalling the night.
After reinstating his position as arguably the world's best sprinter, Nature Strip was quickly snapped up by Chris Waller Racing to run as its 2021 Everest. The race was done in the ultimate style from barrier to post – something McDonald and Waller couldn’t imagine on their way to Randwick for the A$15 million showcase.
And the six-time Group One winner will be forever remembered by his The Everest run in 2021.
Having been closely associated with Lion’s for most of his life, Peter Kean understands celebrations well.
“We celebrated as a Family with drinks, predominantly Scapegrace Gin & Brick Lane Beer. Followed by a delicious dinner that we had all played a part in cooking.
“There were also lots of phone calls, particularly with our fellow Owners, Patrick Harrison, Rod Lyons & Steve Hansen.
Pending a positive recovery from The Everest, Nature Strip will have his next start in the A$2m Gr.1 VRC Sprint Classic, which he has won in style previously.
“At this stage, he will be going to Melbourne to race in the Darley Sprint (now renamed VRC Sprint) at Flemington on November 6, the Saturday after The Melbourne Cup.
“Once again unfortunately we won’t be able to be there in person.
“We would love to be able to travel to Royal Ascot & watch Nature Strip on the world stage in June 2022,” said Kean hopefully.
