Having had a pleasant association with ready-to-run sales in past, including securing Gr.3 Sydney Stakes-winning- Trumbull and Different Strokes over the past few years, Mahtoum Lodge owner and trainer Kim Waugh paid A$150,000 for the “cracking” colt by Invader from the draft of O'Gorman Racing Stables at the recent Magic Millions’ 2YO In Training Sale.
"Due to the Covid restrictions in Queensland I think if he was at the Sydney breeze-up sales he would have brought 200k, so I think we did well purchasing him for 150k," said Kim.
Waugh, has always held that once she selects potential purchases based on good pedigree she then prefers to sight horses before purchases, assessing their physical confirmation as well as watching them at the breeze-ups in the lead-up to the sale. “I watched his breeze up and parade and have also successfully bought from the vendor before, which made my decision easier,” said Waugh.
“The quality stood out and you paid for that quality.
“He ran good time in his breeze up, has a great action, is very well-balanced and a real 2yo running type,” she said.
“I focus on MM’s and Inglis Easter and Classic - I go through the catalogues and then do inspections on my shortlist and then reinspect at the sales.
The 2YO colt is by Article a 1200m winner by Lonhro. She is a half-sister to the recently retired Sound Journey, who has managed to win 3 races in its career so far with his most significant win to date, getting the money in the A$101,500 Emirates Airline Handicap, defeating Our Saint.
“He will have a spell here at Mahtoum Lodge for 6 weeks then commence pre-training and he looks more like a 2YO sprinting type up to 1400m,” said Waugh.
