The William Street Syndicate’s managing owners, Michael Ramsden and Michael Clemenger announced the retirement of the 8YO Lope de Vega gelding, trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman who was last seen when finishing ninth in the Darley Sprint Classic, beaten almost nine lengths by Bivouac.
The decision sees the curtain drop on the gelding’s decorated career which saw him win 10 races, gather A$8.2m in prizemoney and Group One wins in the 2017 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, 2018 VRC Classic, Goodwood Handicap and Stradbroke Handicap and the 2019 TJ Smith Stakes.
Santa Ana Lane was an A$80,000 yearling purchase from the 2014 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale by Bloodstock Agent Justin Bahen.
Anthony Freedman said the sprinter’s win in the TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) was his highlight of Santa Ana Lane’s career.
