Charlie Appleby and Godolphin enjoyed another highly productive day at the Dubai World Cup Carnival despite seeing their 2,000 Guineas contender Master Of The Seas suffer a surprise defeat behind stablemate Naval Crown on his reappearance in the Listed 1m1f Meydan Classic.
Master Of The Seas, was making his first start since finishing a close fourth in the Gr.1 National Stakes at the Curragh last September. That came at the end of a highly successful 2YO campaign in which he won his first two starts, including the Gr.2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket.
Ridden by William Buick, Master Of The Seas was sent off 4-11 but took keen hold in the early stages and could not reel in Mickael Barzalona on the front-running Naval Crown.
Master Of The Seas was pushed out to 25-1 (from 16) by Paddy Power for the first of the year's Classics.
Appleby had earlier saddled Bright Melody to victory in the 1m1f handicap and completed a treble when Star Safari won the Gr.3 Dubai Millennium Stakes.
The Dubai World Cup could be next on the agenda for the fellow Godolphin-owned Volcanic Sky after he led home a Godolphin 1-2-3-4 under Frankie Dettori in the Gr.3 Nad Al Sheba Trophy.
